Supporting English Language Teachers To Upgrade Teaching And Learning Of Children With Dyslexia Through The Integration Of Emerging Technologies And The Acqusition Of Digital Skills
The idea behind the project!
Dyslexia is a neurobiological-based language impairment derived from difficulties in reading and writing and according to the European Commission (EC), it affects the 8-20% of both adults and children across the EU. The English language is an opaque language with a complicated orthography and a high level of incongruence between its spelling and pronunciation, thus, dyslexics who already experience reading and writing difficulties in their mother tongue struggle even more in EFL classes.
In addition, according to the European Dyslexia Charter (2018), teachers are not adequately trained on dyslexia and are not familiar with identifying their students’ difficulties and addressing their specific needs. Moreover, less than 40% of teachers across the EU feel ready to use digital technologies in their teaching.
Research has shown that the use of ICT tools can facilitate and enhance dyslexic students’ motivation and self-confidence, support their literacy and create an inclusive environment which allows them to participate effectively in the learning process.
Based on the above information and statistics the project idea was born with the aim to develop tools and learning materials for teachers related to dyslexia and how to effectively use ICT Tools, in order to create material to meet the specific needs of their students.
